Living a new life with a prosthetic leg at the age of 82

At 82, most people are slowing down, but not this incredible man. After a life full of challenges, he faced one more: the decision to amputate his leg in order to regain mobility and independence. His strength, courage, and determination to keep moving forward remind us that it’s never too late to start again. This is a story of resilience, hope, and the power of the human spirit.

“In July 2022, my right leg was amputated above the knee. A life in a wheelchairhait and/or mobility scooter is not how I wanted to continue. First of all, I wanted to drive a car again. Since June this year, this has been successful and I drive a new car with an adapted pedal (accelerator pedal to the left of the brake pedal). My next goal is to play golf again. In February 2023, we stayed in our home on Madeira for the first time after my operation and we came in contact with physiotherapist Robbie Braz. We stay on Madeira for a period in an average of 5 months per year in the last couple of years. Robbie comes to our home for treatment to help me with my challenges with the amputation but also to help recover from my left drop foot I have suffered for more then 20years. This work has helped the calf muscle in order to gain more stability when standing and walking. Thanks to the exercises Robbie is giving, I have every confidence that I will achieve my goals. My name is Joop Stet and I am now 82 years old.
